When a Painting Feels Complete
Knowing when a painting is finished is rarely a clear decision.
There is no exact moment, no fixed rule. Instead, it is a quiet recognition — a sense that the work no longer asks for more.
Sometimes this happens gradually. The painting settles into itself, and each element begins to feel balanced. At other times, the realization comes suddenly, almost unexpectedly.
Adding more can disrupt this fragile equilibrium.
In my process, I often step away from the canvas before making the final decision. Distance allows the work to reveal whether it still needs something, or if it has already reached its natural conclusion.
Completion, in this sense, is not about perfection. It is about knowing when to stop.
